English- What we are learning

Poetry – Imagery

The children will be using their senses to describe settings, characters, seasons and times of the day. They will be encouraged to include metaphors, similes, alliteration, personification and onomatopoeia.

Key learning objectives:

  • To look at the power of imagery in poetry with special reference to personification as well as metaphors and similes.
  • To write Poems for a class anthology.

Things to work on at home:

Read and discuss the meaning behind descriptive poetry.

Highlight poetic features.


Maths – What we are learning

The children will be developing their understanding of place value to one million. They will be developing their understanding of decimals to two decimal places, rounding to the nearest whole number. They will be investigating number patterns including triangle numbers, square numbers and prime numbers.

Key learning objectives:

  • To be able to order positive and negative numbers in context.
  • To solve simple problems using negative numbers
  • To understand and be able to order and round decimals to two decimal places.
  • To recognise the square numbers to at least 12 x 12.

Things to work on at home

Use decimal numbers when problem solving e.g. money, measures.

Highlight temperatures changes when watching the weather forecast.

Investigate number sequences and explore patterns that can be found.


Science – Light

Look out for shadows and discuss how they are made

Discuss the vocabulary associated with light and vision


Topic – Construction

Investigate the way that buildings have been constructed throughout history and around the world.


Homework (All homework will be set on Monday and due in by Friday)

Spelling: Spellings will be handed out every Monday. Your child will be required to write ten interesting sentences each week.

Please encourage your child to check their work for common spelling and punctuation errors.

English: A comprehension exercise will be set with questions to be answered in detailed sentences. Please encourage your child to add as much detail as possible to each answer and read the questions carefully.

Reading: Please encourage your child to read every night. It is very important that they discuss what they have read and can explain their views, giving examples from the text.

Maths: A problem solving worksheet will be set which should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete. Please encourage your child to explain their methods and check their answers are logical in the context of the question.


PE: Wednesday and Friday – please remember to have PE kits in school.
